Updated: October 6, 2026. Advertising inside conversational AI is moving from experiment to measurable channel. DoubleVerify has announced attribution measurement for ChatGPT Ads, allowing marketers to evaluate the channel alongside search, social, display and other touchpoints in a customer journey.

DoubleVerify and OpenAI are also developing a brand-risk and suitability pilot for conversational advertising. Together, the two initiatives address the questions advertisers usually ask before scaling a new channel: Does it drive results, and is the environment suitable for my brand?

What DoubleVerify launched

DoubleVerify says advertisers can now include ChatGPT Ads as a touchpoint in attribution through DV Rockerbox. The goal is to connect ad exposure or engagement with downstream outcomes such as acquisition and conversion instead of measuring the format in isolation.

That matters because a customer may first discover a brand in one channel, research it in another and convert later through a direct visit. Last-click reporting often gives too much credit to the final interaction.

Why attribution is especially important for AI ads

Conversational advertising does not behave exactly like a conventional search result or social feed impression. Users may be asking detailed questions, comparing alternatives or solving a problem over several turns.

That makes the commercial influence of an ad harder to understand with simple click-through rate alone.

A useful attribution system should help answer questions such as:

  • Did ChatGPT introduce the customer to the brand?
  • Did it assist a later conversion even when it was not the final click?
  • How does acquisition cost compare with other paid channels?
  • Does the channel reach users at a different stage of intent?

An early Weight Watchers result is interesting — but not conclusive

DoubleVerify cited Weight Watchers as an early example. During the measured period, ChatGPT’s attributed cost per acquisition was reported as 15.3% below the company’s established benchmark.

That is encouraging, but marketers should avoid turning one case study into a universal performance assumption. Results can vary dramatically by category, creative, offer, audience and measurement window.

The better takeaway is that advertisers now have another independent measurement path for evaluating performance rather than relying only on platform-reported numbers.

What “brand suitability” means in a conversation

Brand-safety tools were designed largely around pages, videos and feeds. Conversational AI is more dynamic. The context can change as a user asks follow-up questions and the assistant responds.

DoubleVerify says its pilot with OpenAI is intended to evaluate conversational context at scale while protecting private user conversations. The challenge is to give advertisers confidence about the environments in which ads appear without turning private chats into a targeting dataset.

That balance will be one of the most important trust questions as AI advertising expands.

What marketers should test before increasing spend

New channels often look unusually efficient in their first phase because competition is lower and the audience is novel. Performance can change once more advertisers arrive.

Brands should therefore test incrementally and compare:

  • Blended customer-acquisition cost, not only platform CPA.
  • New-customer rate versus existing-customer conversions.
  • Assisted conversions and time-to-conversion.
  • Incremental lift in markets or audiences exposed to the channel.
  • Brand-suitability controls and reporting transparency.

What this means for agencies

Agencies will need to treat conversational AI as its own planning environment, not simply another display placement. Creative may need to be more utility-driven, landing pages may need to answer deeper questions and attribution models will need to account for longer research journeys.

It also increases pressure on marketers to understand measurement methodology. “AI ads performed well” is not enough; teams should know which attribution model produced that conclusion and what the comparison benchmark was.

Frequently asked questions

Can marketers now measure ChatGPT Ads with DoubleVerify?

Yes. DoubleVerify says ChatGPT Ads can be incorporated into its attribution measurement through DV Rockerbox.

Is DoubleVerify reading private ChatGPT conversations?

DoubleVerify says the brand-suitability pilot is being developed without accessing private user conversations.

Does this prove ChatGPT Ads are cheaper than other channels?

No. Early results from one advertiser are promising, but channel economics will vary by business and are likely to change as adoption grows.
