Updated: October 6, 2026. Viktor Gyökeres has spent much of Arsenal’s title defence waiting for a clear opening. He may finally have one.
The Sweden striker has found the net throughout the international break and has now scored in a record seven consecutive UEFA Nations League matches. At the same time, Kai Havertz — the forward who has been starting ahead of him — returned to Arsenal after suffering a muscle injury with Germany.
That combination makes Arsenal’s home match against Leeds United on October 10 unusually important for Gyökeres.
Why the timing matters
Gyökeres has barely played in the Premier League this season. League statistics list only 29 minutes across four appearances, with two of those coming from the bench. Arsenal’s attacking structure has instead been built around Havertz.
But international football has offered Gyökeres something club football has not: rhythm. He scored against Romania, Poland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and then Romania again, extending a Nations League scoring run that began in 2024.
Form does not automatically transfer from country to club, but confidence matters for strikers. A forward arriving from international duty after repeatedly finishing chances is in a far better position to take an opportunity than one trying to rediscover timing from the bench.
What happened to Kai Havertz?
Havertz was withdrawn from Germany duty with a muscle problem and returned to Arsenal for treatment. Arsenal had not issued a detailed public timetable at the time of writing, though reports have suggested he could miss several weeks.
That uncertainty is important. If Havertz is unavailable against Leeds, Mikel Arteta must either reshape the front line or give Gyökeres the kind of start he has been chasing.
Why Leeds is a good test
Arsenal return to Premier League action at the Emirates against Leeds on Saturday, October 10. The champions have taken 12 points from their opening five league games and sit near the top of the table, so the pressure is not simply to experiment — it is to keep winning.
For Gyökeres, the challenge will be different from his Sweden matches. Arsenal often face deeper defensive blocks, which means fewer transition opportunities and less open space. He will need to contribute to combination play, pressing and penalty-box movement as well as finishing.
What Gyökeres can add to Arsenal
His most obvious quality is directness. Gyökeres wants to attack space, run through contact and arrive in scoring positions quickly. When Arsenal’s possession becomes too predictable, that vertical threat can change the geometry of a match.
It can also benefit Arsenal’s creators. Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and the midfield runners gain a different target when the centre-forward repeatedly threatens the space behind defenders rather than always dropping toward the ball.
The bigger question: can he change the hierarchy?
One strong game would not settle Arsenal’s striker debate. Havertz has earned Arteta’s trust because of his off-ball work, flexibility and understanding of the team’s positional structure.
Gyökeres therefore needs more than goals. He has to show that Arsenal can keep their control and pressing standards with him leading the line.
That is why the next stretch is potentially decisive. A temporary injury can create minutes; only consistent performances turn those minutes into a permanent role.
What to watch against Leeds
- Whether Gyökeres starts through the middle or Arsenal use another false-nine option.
- How often he runs behind Leeds’ defensive line instead of receiving to feet.
- Whether Arsenal find him early in transition.
- His pressing chemistry with the wide forwards.
- How many touches he gets inside the penalty area.
