At a glance: Rankings and organic sessions remain useful, but they do not tell the complete story when a searcher finds an answer without visiting a website.

Define the metrics before buying another GEO tool
A mention is a brand name appearing in an answer; a citation is a linked source; a recommendation is an explicit suggestion to consider a brand. They are different outcomes. An answer can mention a brand without linking to it, cite a review of a company rather than the company itself, or link to a page without recommending the company.
For a fixed sample of prompts, measure citation share (responses citing your domain ÷ all sampled responses), brand mention rate and the percentage of commercial-intent prompts that actually recommend you. None of these alone measures incremental sales.
Google Search Console has changed in 2026
Google announced dedicated Search Generative AI performance reporting in June 2026 and said the reporting had reached all sites worldwide by August 31. That makes it important to check the current interface instead of repeating older advice that all AI Overview data are inseparable from ordinary Web performance. Use Google’s generative-AI view where available to examine impressions and trends, and still validate business outcomes with analytics.
That reporting does not mean Perplexity or other independent answer engines supply equivalent first-party dashboards. For them, a carefully documented prompt-sampling audit may be more practical than pretending a crawler-derived rank number is ground truth.
A 30-minute weekly visibility audit
- Create 25–40 prompts split into informational, commercial comparison, branded and problem-solving intent.
- Define the target geography, language, desktop/mobile setting and signed-in state before testing.
- Check Google AI features where visible and Perplexity separately; never combine their denominators.
- Record the exact prompt, date, model or interface, answer text, brand mentions, cited URLs, citation position and competitor citations.
- Re-run a stable panel weekly, adding a separate panel for new topics rather than silently changing the sample.
A simple audit sheet
| Column | Example of what to capture |
|---|---|
| Question cluster | Best privacy-first AI code reviewer for teams |
| Answer engine | Perplexity, tested as a distinct channel |
| Your brand mentioned? | Yes / No / Unclear |
| Your domain cited? | Full URL and position, or None |
| Competitor sources | Top three domains cited |
| User outcome | Useful answer, misleading statement or no relevant response |
How to improve your chance of being a helpful source
Create pages that answer the exact question clearly in the first screen and support conclusions with first-hand examples, methodology, dates and author accountability. Comparison tables, explicit eligibility conditions, working product details and accessible text help both people and search systems understand claims. Keep pages indexable where you intend them to appear, but do not assume that schema markup or repeated keywords will force an AI citation.
Separate the brand’s own claims from independent evaluations. Correct inconsistent brand descriptions on authoritative public profiles. In the next audit, investigate which of your important URLs appear and which competitors’ primary sources are being selected.
What not to claim from an audit
Answer engines can change by query wording, location, personalization and date. An increase from two citations to four in a small sample is directional, not proof of doubled market visibility. Likewise, a fall in clicks may reflect changing SERP presentation, content demand, competitors or tracking changes—not solely AI answers.
Turn the audit into decisions
Prioritize commercially relevant question clusters with repeated competitor citations, a strong opportunity for genuinely better information and clear landing pages. Track assisted conversions, branded searches, engaged visits and sales enquiries alongside citations. Preserve screenshots or response exports for later checks, without violating platform terms.

Frequently asked questions
Is zero-click traffic always lost traffic?
No. An answer may influence later branded searches or offline purchases that are not attributed to the original exposure.
Does Perplexity citation frequency equal Google rankings?
No. They use different interfaces, retrieval and presentation methods; report them separately.
